Wow, really? I always think of teachers as UNDERpaid, OVERworked, but have kind of a cool schedule with the summer hours. I know that you guys do have to work some during the summer, though, even without classes.

Unfortunately the idea that the teacher's hours are the same as the students is prevalent. I go in at 7am, and leave around 4:30 or so,, I bring home work to grade, I plan lessons at home, I go to trainings after school, on weekends and for several weeks during the summer. Since I am at a year round school I get off the first week of June and go back the last week of July,,, I will have almost 8 weeks off this time because of Memorial Day,, oh wait,, did I say off? I'm sorry,, the 2nd and 3rd weeks of June I am in math and science training. The last week of June I have to go to Albuquerque to work on State Standards and then I might have July off,,, except for that bit of Balanced Literacy training but that's ok,, it's only 38 miles one way for 3 days,,
Thank you though Kansaseq,, after my morning I needed those kind words!

Wow, you guys work a LOT during the summer. So much for vacation

I've always thought teachers were way underpaid as well! I think teacher's need increased salaries with hazard pay as well for dealing with today's kids!

Another stereotype that irks me (though isn't directed at me since i don't teach), is that college professors get paid a ton. Unless it is a professor at Harvard or something, it is NOT the case. Student loans out the yin-yang and then after completing a PhD, they get a teaching job for ~$40,000 a year (at least state college here in CA). All that schooling and student loans, and they get paid that?!?

Oh no kidding! I'm looking for a second job teaching at a local community college or university,,, problem is they don't pay enough to pay for the gas to work for them!

I THINK that Police Officers are pretty underpaid too, aren't they? Seems I heard this once and was surprised given that they risk their lives and all.... but I don't know any firsthand so I'm not sure on that one.
