There is no reason to wait until age 3. Once final health testing is done at 24 months, most of the time it is ok to plan breedings on animals who have proven themselves worthy of breeding.

There is no foreseeable reason to wait beyond that until age 3 for breeding unless it is because titling or health testing goals have not been reached.

don't know if it's an old wives tale or not since I couldn't test the theory myself but I was also told not to stud before 2 because it could inhibit his growth? I guess the hormones etc if bred too early keep them from filling out to their best potential. Since I didn't have a stud(I did but he showed joint problems before a year old so I didn't even consider it and he went to a pet home) I never really researched the scientific validity of this theory
