The OP asked what age to breed a dog not what your political opinion of dog breeding is. Making it about your opinions on dog breeding is disrespectful to the OP an I would think breaks rule #2.

He is a really big puppy, and it is not to make money, it is because I would love a puppy from him because he is big and the vet said he would be a great stud dog.

My vet says to wait until they are atleast 2 years old. That way they are fully grown and if there are any issues with hips, legs, repo parts that will show in the breeding physical when it is done.

I just had my Beagles gone over and given the ok to breed. My female is 3 and my male is 4. I would have done it last year, but had a horse at the trainers and didn't have the time needed for puppies. I wish your friend the best of luck with her boy.

Both my males are 2 as of Feb and getting their hips xrayed this Friday.

I have an accidental litter coming up and am rushing to get all the tests done. This is not fun.
While this had taken a twist off point some people had valid issues to present before breeding.
There are several good breeding books out in regular book stores that you can read up on before making a final decision on breeding a puppy. They will teach you what to look for in your own stud as well as a female to produce the best pups that you can. They will also teach a little on genetics to help you understand how to get what you would like out of your male and female. I am reading as much as possible on prenatal care and brushing up on whelping plus trying to find homes for possible puppies.
But you have to remember also that just because the stud is awesome if the female isn't then your chances went way down on getting a good puppy.
I would give the pup some time to develop and get out of that cute puppy stage so you can really see his personality before deciding what to do. At 5 months he should just be teething right now. You still have 2 fear periods to get through with him. One of them is right after a year old. Lots of things can happen in the next couple of months.

biologically it has been shown that a male can breed as soon as his testicles have dropped (ive known toy breeds fertile as young as 3 months)
however thats not suggested, with most breeds its suggested to wait untill hes 2.

labs are prone to hip and elbow issues so ideally a dog being used to stud would be at least ofa tested for hips and elbows (as should the female) to ensure offspring have the best chance of not having these issues.
also being a large breed a lab isnt full grown untill 2 years old...
because of the nature of breeding and potential for problems you want to know how big hes going to be full grown before breeding (again to avoid potential issues...i work with toy breeds so its even more important to make sure the males not too big for the female which increases the risk of c-sections)

also the sperm isnt as "active" younger, so theres a better fertility rate after the 1 1/2-2 year point. while a puppy can impregnate a female youd have a much better chance of sucess out of a 2 yr old dog...
not to mention they seem to be better at it if given some time ot mentally mature. lol, labs are still puppies till 2 yrs old.

to answer the op, he might be fertile now. but I would wait till he is older and more mature to get a very clear answer on his health.

I didn't really read the other posts, but with larger dogs you should wait AT LEAST until they are three years of age, I have studied dog breeding/genetics/fertility/etc. for some time now.
