I hope this is the right place...
Last year when I was 17, I was given 4 baby chicks, 3 female and 1 male, to take care of as a way of easing my depression. I bonded with my rooster the most and love and favor him the most despite his rooster instincts kicking in/becoming more aggressive at puberty. I was not involved in the decision making process of getting chickens, if it were me I would have told my parents not to get them, or at least to do what people on this site say and get 10 hens for our 1 rooster, but I’m very glad they got them anyway. Unfortunately, I found out that roosters are not allowed to be kept AT ALL where we live after we got them and I bonded with my chickens. Nonetheless, thankfully we knew we would be fine as long as no one complained. Well this Wednesday we received a letter about how we have to get rid of our rooster and get a permit to keep our hens. I was not willing to separate my chickens as I truly believe they love each other, and thankfully my father remembered in time that my aunt has a spacious backyard. He called her and she got permission from her husband to take them in. That night was probably the worst day in my chickens life, worse than when the neighbors dog got into our yard... They were sleeping in their coop and then suddenly being put into a cardboard box to be transported to another place.
It wouldn’t have been so bad, being able to see them at my aunts home after all... Except for the fact that her family already had one rooster and one hen of their own. I went to visit my babies today and my rooster was already injured from the night before. I thought he would be able to beat the other rooster easily as he is much bigger than him, but no. My poor babies were covered in dirt and hiding in the bushes. I know roosters fight to the death... I was hoping that the other rooster would simply submit but I don’t want to have high hopes if it will kill my baby...
I don’t want the other rooster to be punished/given away (they’d never kill him), both of them are just acting instinctively. But my aunt was already considering giving him away because he bit her infant son and made him bleed, but I also just think they shouldn’t leave their infant around a rooster. As you can see I’m a big softie so it hurts my heart to see the other rooster injured too. My uncle found and took care of him when he discovered him around his old apartment complex while he was a starving baby chick... When does it become too unreasonable to expect them not to kill each other?
I miss my chickens so much... Watching them live the best life I could give them always calmed me down on my worst days. My pet rabbit was even friends with my chickens... My rooster tried to groom her as if she was a chicken. They lived such great lives and love sunbathing... Now they’re scared, in an unfamiliar place, and my rooster is injured (but not heavily at least). I noticed an immediate change in my roosters behavior towards the hens too. He’s now biting and mounting them constantly and much more aggressively than before. I just want him to go back to being happy again... the hens too of course... My rooster knows not to harm humans so he would be much safer to have around their infant son.
