I've used the sandpaper method but usually just use a hot wash cloth. You aren't supposed to do both - a sandpapered egg will absorb water.
The authorities tell us that the water temperature should be 20°F warmer than the eggs so that the cooler egg doesn't allow water to permeate the shell.
Really, frequent egg collection and clean nests solve most of the problems. Placing the nests where the hens don't walking thru poop on the way there would solve nearly all. Of course, where hens walk . . . .
