1. A friend of mine told me that chickens are afraid of the dark and I need to keep a light on all the time?

2. Another friend says I need to split my hens up into groups of 10 as bigger groups, say the 60 I have wont all lay.

Thoughts?

They can't see well in the dark, they kinda zone out at night, but that's no big deal. The only reason to add a light in the coop is to stimulate longer days and more egg production. I do not light my coop.

10 hens is about the correct ratio per rooster, maybe that's what your friend was thinking?
I have 13 birds on my yard right now, and tons of people have lots more than that. No real reason to split them up, unless maybe it's somehow easier for you to build 2 coops???

I would say you are getting bad advice.

I would agree. I have almost 40 hens in together and laying for them is almost a competition! Also, dark doesn't seem to be a problem either.

Whatever you do, don't take investment, dating, or child rearing advice from these people.
