I use an 2 old curtain rod's stuck through the chicken wire or on top of the brooder.
The chicks postion themselves where they are comfortable with the temp.
I had been keeping the feeder and waterer on 2 plates.
2nd graders are very resourcefull.

When I had chicks in a brooder, I put the waterer on the lid of a 5 gal. bucket. Now that my birds are adult, the water is in the run - only. They sleep at night, so they don't need water in the coop. I do have more than one waterer, too. That way, my birds will be fine for a day or so if I get hit by a bus
or run off with George Clooney.
Don't be offended that people jumped in with the comments about a child in charge of the birds. I have read many heartbreaking stories about creatures that have suffered because people do exactly that. Glad to hear that you are helping your boy as he grows into a responsible young man!
