Ok, I know this might seem like a stupid question(s) but I'm going to ask anyway
.
Let me set the scene.
This is my first year with chickens and September we got our first egg. Every few weeks since, another would lay.
We are up to "four hens a layin'
"
:
1 RIR, 1 GC, 1 sapphire gem, and the 4th is unknown. Likely suspects are the other sapphire gem or the silkie. The silkie is 5 months.
The mystery egg is the same size as the sapphire gem that is already laying but the texture is much different, very rough and it is slightly lighter like a cream color. Who do you think laid it?
Next:
The same suspected sapphire gem was observed in the nesting box sitting on eggs (RIR and GC eggs). I opened the box, she saw me and automatically started scooping the eggs completely under her. Does this answer the question above? Also, does this mean she's broody? Do you think a hen that is close to laying will sit on eggs even though she's never laid? I pet her with ease and a few seconds after she got up and left the coop.
