do you guys ever have one of THOSE weeks??? i'm feeling so discouraged and whiny!!!!!!!!!!!!! i wish we'd done stuff differently on the coop and it's got me bummed!!!!!!!

our 2month old peeps just went out to live in their outside coop/run last week. i was enough of a wreck just dealing with them being outside, and then we were having below freezing temps (but they have a heat lamp and were much happier than i was worrying about them!!!). NOW we're having *censored* sideways wind and rain and water is getting into the COOP! aaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrgh!!!! i'm going to stomp out there and take pics tomorrow, but where the water is getting in is through the seams on our people access doors on the back of the coop...

basically the whole back side is 3 doors: upper one hinged at the top for our access to the cubby where their heat lamp sits; middle one hinged at the bottom for our access to the roosting and future nest box area; bottom one hinged at the bottom for our access to the floor for food/water and cleaning. for now, there's a stupid tarp across the whole back of the coop so that no MORE can drip in there... for long term, any ideas for weather stripping a door that is hinged at the bottom and opens out???? the only solution that i see is switching the hinges to the tops of the door so that we can lay weather stripping (the kind with metal on one side and rubber on the other) across the top and caulk the top of the stripping... but this is going to make it a pain in the a$$ to open the bottom door especially.........

it's not particularly cold out right now (thank goodness), but i've read enough to worry about the damp with the peeps. they've got good ventilation (although one side's vent is covered with the dumb tarp right now - but still an open vent on the non-weather side). their roosts are dry, as is the future nesting-box area (where they like to sleep nestled in the shavings and straw), but some of the wood is still damp around the doors... should i haul them back into the dog crate in the house until we can get their house dried out, or do y'all think they'll be fine???

thanks in advance....

thanks, silkie! i should just let the stupid boards rot, then we'll just "have" to build a coop in the garage for them....

Got this idea from someone here - sorry i don't remember WHO at the moment...but feel free to claim credit if you recognize your own good idea!

buy a couple of cheap innertubes - the kind that go into bicycle tires. Slice them lengthwise so you have a 4" wide strip of rubber, and then staple around the door to help block the rain. The tubes are like $3-4 at Walmart.

Does that make sense?

I got some to help waterproof my external feeder on the coop and they work great and are very flexible so they move right out of the way when you need to open the access door.

Not sure if this will help. I'm in Iowa and we had quite the ice storm with horizontal rain mixed in. I had the coop door open most of the time. I made a "curtain" that covers the door except for the bottom 12 inches. It's two layers of plastic with two layes of burlap. This created a nice wind and rain break and the bulap kept the plastic from flying up in the wind.

Oh and it wokrs great to keep the heat in. I have 8 chickens and one heat lamp and outside was 17 degrees this morning and it was 55 degrees in the coop with the door open.
