Styrofoam eating

Mine ate a huge piece that they found outside before I cottoned on as to who was damaging it. None came to any harm.

Mine messed up a pretty nice 2" thick sheet of styrofoam I have before I caught them but no harm to the chickens as far as I could ever tell. Sure did mess up that nice sheet of stuff though

Thanks for all your interesting stories about chicks eating styofoam. As you all figured, none showed any problems. The styrofoam was removed as soon as we caught on to what they were doing. They are free-ranged in the afternoons, so they probably eat more stuff than I know. While they are out scavenging, a squirrel is in their pen eating scratch grain. My son got me a bb pistol which I shoot near it to run it off. I don't try to hit the little guy. But it does scare him off for a few days and when I see him at it again, same routine. It's getting colder in Louisiana these days and he is just trying to fatten up. Can't blame him, but I can't feed the whole world.

Depending on what source you read, it takes 400 to 500 yrs for Styrfoam to break down in a landfill, so I doubt it would in a chickens digestive system in a day or so. Mine have eaten it on occasion and no adverse effects to date.

I got so upset when DH said they ate that expandable stuff that was stuck to his leg after sealing up the coop for me a couple weeks ago! But eggs ready to go "to market" would be swell!!!!!

Doug Akers of Purdue Univestity and an Orpington/Sumatra breeder and exhibitor actually gives his birds styrofoam balls to stop boredom. He has been doing this for years with no ill effect.

Seems our egg production went up when our flock destroyed the new styrofoam barn insulation last spring.
