My husband and I have been raising chickens for about two years now, and we love all the breeds we have...leghorns, bantams, rhode island reds, barred rocks, sussex, buffs...so we just started hatching our own cross breed eggs, they will hatch in about 21 days...does it matter if the rooster is the rhode island red with all these girls, and which have stronger genes that the new babies will take after?

Curious in Mass....thanks

It doesn't matter, you will just end up with mixed breed chicks. They often are healthier, better layers, etc. because of the greater genetic diversity they have. It's also fun to watch them grow because you are never quite sure what they will end up looking like.

Thank you for your input Hanna8. I can't wait to see what they all look like...very anxious chicken momma here lol

Hello :frow and Welcome to BYC! Half the fun of mixed breed chicks is seeing what you get. If you want to play around with the colors you may get, here is a link to a chicken color calculator, use "Help, pick color from list" for pictures http://kippenjungle.nl/kruising.html
