Suctioning liquid out of crop?

Even if you are able to remove fluids from the crop, the symptoms still need to be addressed/treated. Read this article on how to treat the crop.

DO keep in mind that most crop issues are a symptom of an underlying condition. Worms, Reproductive Disorders, Infection, etc., are commonly seen along with crop symptoms.

Looking at the photos of the hen in the thread you started yesterday, she has a Pendulous Crop as well. There can be more the one "crop symptom" too. If the crop is Sour, Hard and Pendulous, you will want to treat for all 3, but take care to not push the contents back up or she may aspirate.

I do agree, if the hen is not yours, then the owner really needs to be addressing the problem instead of you. All may seem well and good unless something bad happens.

It seems likely that she has all three, then? It was squishy and sour yesterday, but seems hard today. For impacted crop, you massage with oil, for sour crop you give medicine, and for pendulous crop you use a crop bra, correct?

I’ll see if the neighbors are willing to take care of it. I’ll try and send them a link to the article that Azygous wrote. The problem is that they don’t feel comfortable doing this for their chicken, and I feel like since I am, it’s kind of my ‘duty’.

I would not massage, but I would treat with the yeast medication and coconut oil.
See if you can get the crop to empty without having to use a bra. Fluid and the bra are not going to go well together, it will push the fluid up and possibly cause her to aspirate.

I get your point, but if your neighbor is going to have chickens, animals, livestock, etc., then they need to get comfortable tending to their needs. I'm all about helping as well, but they need to be learning along the way and not rely on someone to do it for them. You definitely want to make the point that you are just trying to help out and that any methods that are tried may not work, the hen may get worse or even die. Just so they understand this.

I think what your doing is fantastic! I also understand that they may not be comfortable. Maybe just have them "handle it" but you can be their helping hand? Maybe suggest that they start a thread on BYC, or do their own research, but you can come help with everything.
I think its important they start a thread so that they can hear all of this, instead of have you tell them. It will be easier for them to help her if they get all the info, and help diagnose the underlying cause. Then you can be sure all your hard work wont go to waste because they didn't get all the details.

My thoughts exactly.

Ok, thanks guys. It’s really hard for me-people often tell me I’m too helpful, but I guess if they want to keep chickens, they should at least be able to help care for a hen with crop issues.

You will be helping them by teaching them how to care for her.

You can still help. My all means go and help them with treatment, suggest reading, point them in the direction of BYC, just make them do the research, and some of the work. You can still be their helping hand. :)
A friend of mine has a flock of chickens, we're often running into questions. I usually post the BYC thread for her, and we read through it together, then address together. She just doesn't have the time to research/keep up with a BYC thread. Maybe you could do something like that?
