Hello everyone,

Over the last several weeks I have been preparing to transition my chickens, who are about six weeks old, from my house to a section of my garage. I planned on making this transition until the weather suddenly changed in my area of the country. Instead of it being in the mid 60's it will now be in the low 40's (for the high). The weather channel expects the low to drop between 28-30*F at night and remain like this throughout the next several weeks.

To provide a little detail...my chickens have been inside all their life. I removed the heat lamp I was using in their brooder about two weeks ago and they have done great. The Rhode Island Reds and Jersey Giant's are huge and fully feathered out. The Sebright bantams are also fully feathered...but are still quite small (even for a bantam).

After speaking to several other backyard farms in my neighborhood...everyone seems to agree that they should be okay to move to my garage. I don't, however, fully agree this is the best transition to make at this time. I would hate to lose any of my chickens.

Is it okay to move my chickens to my garage if I begin to reuse a heat lamp? Does anyone have any suggestions to decrease the stress caused by such a transition or any general tips?

If they're fully feathered, they should be just fine. If it makes you feel better, put the heat lamp out there for night time, but make sure they have plenty of room to get away from the heat if they get too warm. Your chickens have their own down coats to keep them comfy.
