I need help with my favorite little peep. He is about 8 weeks old and was doing great until about 3 days ago, when he began turning his toes in. It has gotten so bad that he is just walking on the sides of his feet now.
I asked my vet and other people and no one seems to know what is going on, we have been through everything and there doesn't seem to be a cause or cure.
Here is the background on him, I got him with 3 other chicks as a day old from a local lady, a few weeks later it became more clear that he is not a full silkie as previously claimed, but rather a mix, most likely polish mix. The other 3 peeps look full silkie and are doing fine, active, good weight, straight legs and bright eyed. They get a balanced diet. I feed DuMOR chick starter/grower, chick grit, boiled eggs, grass, veggies, mealworms and fresh herbs(whatever I have there for cooking), plus vitamins in their water, so there should be no way that it is any kind of deficiency. Now my little troubled peep has just had a major growth spurt and has gotten a lot taller and he does have silkie feet with 5 toes. Could the reason for his bad feet be from the crossing of the 2 breeds and his legs have trouble catching up to the rest of him? I have been putting braces on him, but they don't seem to help much. It's affecting both of his feet, though the right one seems a lot worse, so I doubt it's an injury.
These guys are still in the brooder since it is still a bit cold for them outside, but there is plenty of room for them since there are only 4 chicks. As a substrate I use aspen shavings with some hay over it, so he isn't on slick floors either. I don't know what else to do, I need to save him, he is the one I have bonded most with.
