I have had three chicks die today. Pretty unexpectedly. Last night I noticed these two seemed lethargic and unwilling to move about the brooder. They just stayed under the heat plate. I couldn’t get them to drink anything and both crops were completely full and hard. I came home from work to find them dead and trampled flat. I should have separated them. This morning one of them had pasted up pretty bad. I cleaned it right away and waited for it to poop but nothing. The pasted butt looked like mucus With chunks, not normal pasted butt. Any ideas? I’m worried about losing more. All the deaths from this batch Including the Deathlayer are chicks I ordered. The others I hatched seem to be doing fine. I’m really upset because these were all on the expensive side and a breed I was extremely excited about. Sorry for the graphic photos.

Sorry for your loss. Some shipped chicks die from shipping stress. There could be some problem with the genetics, the hatch, or they may have been weak chicks. Pasty butt is common in shipped chicks, and can be a sign of shipping stress. I would contact the hatchery to see if they can send replacements or a refund.

The breeder suggested coccidiosis and I’m certain they are right. Treated remaining chicks immediately.
