Game Bird mix usually build high energy as that feed designed for game birds maybe she can't tolerate that much high energy
I've read that when hen hatch eggs it takes so much energy ..

I feed them a 24% protein game bird mix powdered and mixed with a budgie seed. I've been feeding them it for years and this was the first death like it.

Really?? Never heard of such a thing, interesting. Might want to do some research into fatty-liver disease. It can shorten the life span and they can drop without any warning signs.

Just want to point out that OP stated they're referring to a King Quail hen (aka button quail) so high protein gamebird feed is definitely what's appropriate here.
