This morning before I was getting ready to go to work I noticed one of my RIR was having some trouble swallowing (this is a new bird in my flock have had her about 2months)., she was kind of gasping for air. I caught her and put her in the coop (isolated). I looked in her mouth and noticed she had what looked like cottage cheesy things in her mouth. I looked in my chicken books and thought maybe it could either be thrush or fowl pox. Because I was getting ready for work I didn't really treat her then. Stopped at grocery store on way home to get some stuff to treat her and when I got home she was dead. What could have caused this sudden death. It was like w/in 8 hours of me noticing this. Now, I was on vacation for a week and just got home Tues. so this could have been going on while I was gone, but the person taking care of the chickens probably wouldn't have noticed something like that.
On another note. I have another chicken the night before I noticed she had goopy eyes. She appeared to be having trouble breathing too, but no cottage cheesy stuff in her throat like this other chicken. Also, a clear discharge from her nose. I did inspect her and she does have white clumps in the armpit of her wings. I know this is lice and I have treat her for that. Also, have cleaned up her eyes and put a warm/hot compress where the stuff in her eyes have gotten on her muffs (she's an Ameraucana). I also cleared the outside of her nasal passage as best I could. She is currently isolated. I have also put ACV in her water. What could she have, besides the obvious lice? Would lice cause goopy/watery eyes and nasal discharge? Besides the ACV in her water should I give her anything else?
BTW, just to let you know I will only give antibiotics as a last resort. So if you can recommend something on the holistic avenue would appreciate it. Am treating her w/ theaupeutic grade essential oils for the nose thing. And gave her some other stuff internally too.
Thanks
Kim
