Sudden death!

Sorry for your loss. I would agree that it would be possible that your dead chicken was a meat bird, a cornish cross. Occasionally, these birds are accidentally bought by people thinking they are egg layers. Meat birds are typically meant to be butchered around 6-8 week old, and if they are kept past that time, they can suffer from leg injuries and heart attacks. Can you post a picture of the remaining white chicken? This is a picture of growing cornish cross meatbirds—note the heavy bodies:

I think iadeed the images properly. Unfirtunately these chicks were at a pet store around Easter and they had no clue about anything.

Some people with meat birds they try to keep longer will limit their feed intake and let them free range, so they do not gain too much weight. So sorry that this happened.

Getting an accidental meat bird happens way more than it should. They are usually labeled by breed, in feed stores, but many people don’t recognize names. The staff needs to be more helpful to point out that this bird is not going to usually grow up to be an egg layer. Many feed stores also will put chicks that are leftover from past shipments into a bin, and reduce the price. I saw chicks for 25 cents this last spring at a local store, since people had not yet started buying yet.
