I just bought a pair of black Cochins today. They are not bantams. No predator attacked them, we left them alone in their new homes. After 2 hours , I checked and saw that the female was dead. I took the male. He has sparkling eyes and is not moving or eating. It is like he is depressed . Help ? What should I do with the male ? I have never culled a pet and never will!!!!!

I'm so sorry for your loss! do you think they had health issues when you bought them? I would look listen and feel for any more clues as to what might be wrong. how is his breathing? any sound when he breathes? how is his poo? any thing at all that you can find different? without symptoms its really hard to guess what's going on with him. are his feathers ruffled? any thing you notice would help us help you make a diagnosis. perhaps posting a picture might help too. I wish you the best and hope he gets well soon.

The only thing different I could find is that he is doing something weird with his neck with its mouth open. I thought it is thirsty, I gave him some water but still it won't stop doing that.

I will try to send some pics when I get the time. I have been keeping chickens for about two years but now the new chickens that I am buying are doing these things with their necks. The place where I live is very hot upto 35 to 37 in this season. Do chickens think if it is too hot ? What should I do in the summers?

After the 30th I will be free and will set up new home for these . I know they were new but I can't see them dying and will not let anyone of them die .

post #1 there is a siege of buffalo gnats through out the country we have them big time here in Missouri they are blood feeders and bite and put a toxin in the birds they are killing chickens and pigeons in this area they will be around the head and neck mainly about the size of a ant with wings.good luck
