This morning I found one of my flock of 3 month old dark brahmas dead in her roosting box. No odd behaviors in the days leading up to her death. The others seem fine, and there were no signs on her body of damage or disease. I have notice however that when the group of all 14 sleep they will try and pile into one or two nesting boxes of average size. Could this behavior of stacking themselves on top of one another be enough to have suffocated my poor daisy chick!? Has anyone had this problem and how can I get them to spread out a little? I have enough boxs for all of my chickens and they insist on squishing into one box! I know this is normal for chickens to want to huddle but it makes me so scared I could lose another one of my flock..... :(

I'm so sorry for your loss....we try so hard and love our little chickens and it's extra hard when they seem fine and are just gone. I have has a flock for three years and have always been in transition. I just lost a 7 month old pullet from heat stroke yesterday and have another that I'm trying to recover from egg yolk peritonitis. Some of the best advice I ever got was that you learn to love your flock as a whole and not individually. Although this is so hard, I have to say it has helped me. I have not had smooth sailing with my flock....and that philosophy has made it a little easier to deal with. Again, I'm so sorry about your little one. :(

Cluckcluck18. Thank you for your comments and advice! This is my first flock on my own, and I think maybe that may have a lot to do with me feeling so insecure about this incident. I think your advice will help a little to move on if this or when it happens again.
