i just started my first coop. I purchased six hens that are supposed to be already laying, but they are a little shy. I will give them about a week to acclimate to their new home. I come home from work and go straight to tell the girls hello. I will be ordering a few chicks to raise soon and I am so looking forward to it.

Glad you're here !

A must have for your poultry is a FIRST AID KIT for any issues that would arise. (https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/suggestions-for-a-first-aid-kit.1150128/)
It's definitely better to have it and not need it rather than need it and not have it.

Also, make sure your coop(s) have a proper amount of VENTILATION. (https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...-there-and-cut-more-holes-in-your-coop.47774/) Your chickens will absolutely thank you for it!

One last thing, please get your chickens some Vaseline or bag balm to stave off frostbite before they get it! Baby, it's cold outside! :D

Give them time, its winter and they’re probably stressed in a new environment so i wouldn’t expect eggs anytime soon. If you have the space you may want to just pick up a few pullets now, they may be ready to lay in the spring/summer.
Chics are fun but a lot of work, so unless you have the time, pullets are a lot easier...

G’Day from down under Sugar Hill Chick :frow Welcome!

Gorgeous girls! I am lucky that I work from home and so much enjoy walking outside at finishing time to 'play' with the girls.

Topic of the Week - Getting Started, Keeping Chickens
and this one when you get those chicks:
Topic of the Week - Integrating Chicks into an Adult Flock

If you would like to share more Pictures and Stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)
