I'm planning a pond (made out of a bathtub and maybe a few other old bathroom bits) that I will add to my chicken run. I hope to add a duck or two to the pond someday and want my plans to incorporate future waterfowl in keeping the important plants.

I will be growing jasmine polyanthem, reed mace, sugarcane, sweet flag, flowering rush, sugarcane, water hyacinths, and possibly water chestnuts. Also some cheap flower.

I've never seen a duck eat jasmine or cattails, the flowers can be replaced with another flower, and I don't care about the rest save for the sugarcane. Would waterfowl end up eating that? Are any of those bad for ducks?

This might help you decide which plants would work and would be safe. http://www.poultryhelp.com/toxicplants.html

They all seem fine, though irises concern me. How inclined are ducks to eat it?
My ducks ate down my Japanese irises[miniature] this spring to a nub actually, and they are all still alive. But if you want some for their flowers I wouldn't plant them. Not sure mine will even come back, but my huge[ tall] irises they haven't touched at all. They nibbled on the day lilies.

The list said flag (iris) was bad. Perhaps it's just a certain kind of iris.

At least they'll stay away from my sugarcane.

Any flowers they won't eat that like to live around ponds?

I'm not sure what they wouldn't eat around the pond and what they won't eat they will trample to death, these irises are the small miniature ones my flags they have never eaten. I don't have many left I gave most away but I do still have a few up in there fenced in area.
