Suggestion for LG incubator accuracy

I think great minds think alike. We were doing these things a long time ago amd had many threads on them. It's good to see newbies hard at it.

Here are some more things to ponder, from many seasons of experience.
=============================================

Instead of water balloons, try some ceramic tiles or flat stones below the screen. They still provide thermal buffering, but dont take up any space in the bator.

Instead of culling clears, leave them in to add their own buffering effect.

Leave the bator alone! Candle at day 7 and 14 and stay out the rest of the time.

If you are hand turning, dont open the bator - just reach in through the window and move them around with your hand.

Make a jacket of bubble wrap to insulate you bator from temp extremes, being mindful of the vent holes.

To isolate your bator from temp excursions in the room, place the unit in the bottom of a little used closet.

Place it on a piece of 1" styro insulating board.

Use a water weasel to monitor temps, with a good remote probe thermometer.

Practice "Dry Incubation."

Get a cigar hygrometer for monitoring humidity.

Wow thanks David!

That is exactly the kind of practical tips i'm looking for. I have spent a lot of time using the search function, but often the search terms and the resulting information don't line up. Sometimes it's really usefull for repeat info, as sometimes the really useful tips are buried on page 15 of a thread about something else.

I didn't have a clue that those windows were removeable! When I set my eggs later this month I think I will lock the LG shut with a couple of pieces of 100 mph tape and just use the windows.

My room is very stable so that's not a problem. I have a continual variable speed blower on my heating system which provides very steady warmth, and my LG seems to be very steady as well (so far so good).

I have read the dry incubation "how to" a couple of times now, and from the many posts I've read it certainly seems that high humidity 1-18 causes more failures than low humidity. I certainly plan to run it on the low end.

I have calibrated my 2 Springfield hygrometers with a salt test, and one is dead on at 75% rh and the other is at 72.

I'm kinda old with lots of gray hairs, but I'm looking forward to my first hatch like a little kid

Thanks again!

I know, huh? Ive put away - and dragged my incubators back out for more seasons than I care to count, and I still get little thrill each time I hear that tell-talle "cheep" from inside.

Test run your LG with 2-3 water filled soda bottles for a few days, first, if you havent already done so. They act differently when you put a load on them.
