So my roo has grit for brains. I caught him walking in the water yesterday and brought him in to dry off his feet ( we are having a nasty winter like a good portion of you)

He already has a frostbit comb and wattles and I thought he might like some pampering even though he is normally a big jerk to me.

Well once we were inside I noticed that his feet were incased in a thin layer of ice and one toe has a red ring around it that looks like frostbite. I put him in the room with the baby chicks where he was walking around but holding up the foot with the bad toe when he would stop. He eventually parked himself near the heat lamp.

This morning both his feet are swollen a little and are warm. (He was laying near the heat lamp though - so that could be the source of the warmth)
He also doesn't want to stand up.

Is there anything I can do for him? There doesn't seem to be any discoloration with the exception of the one toe.

This is a 14 month old black copper maran.

I would keep an eye ont he bad toe.. I had a few hens that I bought from an older fellow and two of them had gotten frostbite on their toes .. They looked yucky then one day I go out to feed and find the black toes had fallen off.. It never even slowed them down..

So do you think the swelling will go down in his feet? He seems to be in pain and he is letting me handle him - not normal. He is awesome and gentle with hens and baby chicks but usually tries to bite me or spur me.

I am headed to the feed store after work today and would like to pick up anything I could use to help him as they are closed on the weekends.

It sounds like frostbite.I had a hen that got it on both legs clear up to the feathers. Her legs and feet swelled up so bad they were like rollypolly on the bottoms.
I would start him on an antibiotic. The infection in the blood that comes with frostbite will take them first.
I just lost a baby goat to frostbite. It can happen in a matter of minutes.

I would do as suggested. Keep him warm and watch him. If it is frostbite and it is severe enough the toe will turn black and fall off. There is really nothing to be done. If it gets infected then you can treat him with some antibiotics. I used tetracycline in the water when CHarlie lost his feet. Good luck! Terri O in WI

Well my big guy is getting up and walking a bit more today. His steps are stiff and robotic and he doesn't seem to have good balance. I got him some vitamins at the feed store. I also brought in one of his girlfriends for company. I think I will make him up a spot in the garage this weekend where he can stay until his feet totally heal. My husband can't handle him crowing inside for long.

SO glad to hear he is doing well... Yea I have to side with your hubby on the crowing in the house .. I had two Showgirl roos in the house for about an hour .. that was enough..
