Suggestions for a broody type bantam

So far it looks like a thumbs up for silkies! Anyone else?

Thank you to those who contributed so far.

One more question on the subject, do they get nasty when broody? I've got 9 pullets right now, and none have gone broody. Three are laying as long as they have sufficient light and can go outside for a bit, but none sit. Lay and leave.

Well-I will have to say COCHIN--like chickenaddict...
I cant get mine to stop being broody...whether it is invisable eggs, ceramic ones, her own or others--she is the brood machine!

I know many people love their silkies but I have no idea why?? I just think they look a little goofy

I do love my cochin mama. Cochins always make great mamas but the best broody we have is a black rosecomb. She was so encredibly determined to sit. I gave up and put some fridge eggs under. We had a staggered hatch (I think she laid another after we put the eggs under her) so I had to put an egg in the bator for a couple days cause she was already taking the other out for food. When it hatched, we introduced them and she flew across the yard just at the sound of its peeps!

My grandfather raised black rosecombs and my father always had one in his production flock to do the hatching.

and here's a baby

The babies are now almost 4 months and she STILL calls them over for food. I bet I could give my cochin peeps to her right now and she'd mommy them all over the place

I think most broodies do. I have broody Silkies and none of them have been nasty to me. When it was time to candle, I'd just reach in and grab an egg and they let me; they don't seem stressed at all. My bantams aren't overly friendly, either, they follow me for treats, but they never let me pet them, so I was surprised they let me handle their eggs.

You need a silkie x with one of the larger breed, better than full silkie due to the feathering. Get the right size bird and she'll sit on 12 large eggs comfortably.

I have a dutch that has been driving me crazy ! Seem's like she is aleays broody ! I also have a cochin that is broody right now as well. They are about 18 months old. My golden sebrights are not broody at all.

Old english game bantams. cochins, Silkies, all are supposed to be able to go broody at the drop of a hat... cons of em? Old english's can be fairly agressive with chicks (Not all. but their great mothers so they will even attack you if they feel their chicks are being threatend). and have heard of chicks getting caught in the silkies "Hair" causing death in a few cases... cochins im not sure. Gentle with chicks as far as i know... And are extra fluffy. probably cover more eggs too
