Hi All,
I just discovered my chickens have mites for the first time. Not sure what type they are but they were dark colored and I found them crawling on eggs, in the nest box, and on the roost. I'm going to assume all 8 of my chickens need to be treated. I ordered some Elector PSP online which will be here on Friday but I'm looking for some tips:
  1. How thoroughly do I have to soak the chickens? I'll be using a spray bottle. Any particular part of them (vent, under wings, etc) to focus on?
  2. How thoroughly should I spray down the inside of the coop? It's an all wood construction.
  3. Is there anything I should spray down in their run to prevent them from picking back up mites?
  4. I've heard that you should only have to treat them once with Elector PSP but I've also read elsewhere that you should retreat after 14 days. Is there a reason to retreat?
Other suggestions?

What we do.
We hang our hen inside down and sprinkle 7 dust powder to treat mites. Get the powder into the down well. Shake off excess, while wearing a mask. When we bring show birds to our County Fair, it is mandatory to dust your birds before they are allowed in the building with the rest of the competition.

Did you win the bug battle yet? I used permethrin. Had a bad mite infestation ( red ones that feed at night) . After battling with many things, finally removed the sides of the coop, and treated all surfaces and crevices. I put the panels back on leaving a gap between the supporting frame and the panels. It took months before they were eliminated.

The treatments seemed to have worked (knock on wood). I ended up doing a second treatment with the rest of the elector PSP I had in the tiny bottle I got. Not sure it was necessary but thought it was better to do a second round then chance it. I also heavily sprinkled sulfur powder in their run and dust bath areas.
