Suggestions for places to advertise free roos...

I used freecycle and the small animal sale.So far i havent been able to cull any of my extra roos.I have done it before with no proublems.So see if you have a local livestock auction place that has a small animal sale,usally if they have a goat sale they have small animal sales.you could just give the extra roos away there.

Thanks for making me feel awful & guilty, Sunny.....I cannot butcher an animal; no way, no how. So long as they go to someone who will get sustenance from them, I'm happy to give them away for free. The other time I listed an extra cockerel on Craigslist, I got at least 5-6 responses right away; I met with the person before she took him, and she decided to keep him & still has him today. It was a win/win situation.

I go to an animal sale 2 times a month here in Indiana... I bought 2 chinese geese (9.00) awhile back and a sweet grass turkey hen(7.50).
last Friday I bought 3 show quality silkie hens just young ones mixed in with so so and frizzles.. I paid 3.00 for them..
chicks 1.00 guineas keets 2.00. If you don't have a carrier they box them for you!

I bid against meat buyers and win bids on the banty roosters.. they are apparently used for sacrifice....

I have bought a few large roosters that were tame and colorful...
The funny thing is they can go for more than hens!
especially 4-h birds which are now being sold after fairs are over....
there is definately a market for roosters..

My hubby says I cannot save them all but a little banty doesn't take up much room and they free range and have plenty of barn space too.

What type of chickens are those I don't know every breed and what it looks like, I know prob not even 10 or so breeds. Ive had chickens for awhile but Im new at this BYC.

Awe, thanks so much, gritsar! I probably shouldn't have said it...I get too emotional about this stuff. I wish I could keep them all, as a few are really pretty birds. I just hope I can find someone to take them soon! They are starting to bully my younger ones.

Wynette, it wasn't my intention to make you feel guilty. Your post just made me realize how much time & effort I used to expend trying to get rid of extra roosters from my flock. And made me wonder if the reluctance I used to have for processing my own birds actually subjected them to harsher treatment in someone else's hands. It wasn't always possible for me to question my buyers at length, or to inspect their premises.

After a neighbor showed me how to process chickens I learned that it really isn't that bad of a job. Of course the initial chop isn't my favorite part, but it's satisfying to know I can do the job quickly & well, humanely & with kind handling right up to the end. Even better is knowing my family & I will be enjoying clean, healthy meat from birds who were well cared for and had a pleasant life.

I know that this forum has members with a wide spectrum of attitudes & opinions about keeping chickens. There's a lot we all need to agree to disagree upon. I'm not trying to change your mind nor make you feel bad for your choices. I just want to share how my perspective on spare roosters has changed, and in my opinion, for the better.
