My flock is currently in an 8x8x10 (high) pre-fab shed, with only the cracks of the doors for ventilation when closed at night. I have a fan in there that runs day or night during warm weather.

During the day, the birds free range and only return to lay. The human doors stay open, a 6' square opening. I use a 6-8" layer of hay for my DLM on the wood floor (obviously not a composting DLM).

There is no smell when I open the coop in the morning, but nonetheless, I worry about ventilation- particularly as when winter comes, the breath of 19 birds will cause humidity issues in the sub-zero temps and I fear the possible resulting frostbite.

NOW- the issue- I can't open big vents or direct ventilation...because I have a contraband roo. He is quiet all day, but crows at about the point that sun breaks in...right now about 6:30. One might think that the lack of windows would nix that...but notsomuch.

Any suggestions about using an elbow and rain guard to control the noise while adding ventilation? Or some other ideas??

Temps and ventilation ought to have been a bigger problem by now, but we've had a very mild wet summer...rather than 100+ temps we'd normally see all July and August...but that reprieve won't last forever...

I would recommend putting the roo in a cage at night where he cannot lift his head high enough to crow until YOU decide it's OK. This will give you "free range" to fix up the coop however best suited for your other birds and weather conditions. No need for all to suffer over one goofy guy.

Sadly, this doesn't work. This roo has been sleeping in the house an a small cat carrier at times, because he's had a prosthetic beak...long story...but he still manages to crow lying down.

Were we not in love with the booger, we'd not have the drive to spoon-feed him 4 times daily...if that's an indication of our dedication to him.

I've kept him in the house for the last two months, save the last week, and i don't have a single room without windows- not even a closet- house is 100 years old- no closets.

Keeping him with the flock is important to us...and our rest.
