My 6 month old Welsummer came down with a Rye Neck a few days ago. She went 36 hours without eating or drinking so I took her to a vet. We are on 3 meds, syringe feeds and TLC. If she isn't better in a few days we will Euthanize her and test her to find out whats wrong.

I DO NOT want to lose her. I have heard that Rye Neck can be caused by a nutritional deficiency. They are all on layer crumble (good quality) but I want to douse her with vitamins and see if that will pull her through. Any suggestions on which vitamins to give? We have Nurtri-drench on hand that I have given her twice. The only thing that has changed in the 24 hours is shes a bit more feisty.

I need help and suggestions!!

Actually Nutri-Drench given 3 ml daily orally will cover the vitamins that are important in treating wry neck which are vitamin B1 (thiamine,) vitamin E, and the mineral selenium. Other causes of wry neck are head injury, Mareks disease, avian leukosis, and heredity. Many chickens with wry neck will require some assistance getting enough to eat and drink. Here is a good link about it:

Thanks so much!

Our vet said there is no real way to tell what is causing it unless they pass and you test their body. Mareks is not as likely as some of the other causes because she isn't having tons of symptoms of Mareks (thank goodness). We are treating for bacterial and anti-inflams in case its an injury. Im helping her eat 4 times a day (a chicken-feed smoothie). Im just hoping she makes it.

So our pullet did ok with what we gave her (antibiotics and something else) as well as a dewormer. Also, gave her vitamins and hand fed. She finally got to the point where I put her outside and was going to let nature run its course. She got better! She was great for about a week and is back to rye neck again. This time its so bad her eyes won't open. NO other chickens have issue (suggesting its isolated rather than communicable disease). Anybody have any suggestions? Should I just put her down?
