Hello everyone!

I'm new to the chicken world, & totally lovin' it so far!

A couple of weeks ago I ordered a dozen layer variety chick, got 14!

All have suvived and are happy little campers:p

Anyways... unfortunately in my order I didn't get any Barred Plymouth Rocks, I really wanted a few...

I am going to order (4) BPR and would like to add 1 rooster to the flock. Any suggestions on what would be the best roo to chose?

Ideally I am looking for a showy roo, one with big blue and green tail feathers (traditional looking rooster) But I also want him to compliment my flock of I think;
~5 BSL
~5 Columbian rock x Red,
~4 RIR x Columbian Rock,
& hopefully 4 Barred plymouth Rocks.
They are only 2 weeks old! But I am almost positive on what I have.

Should we decide on letting a few of my girls go broody down the road, I want to make sure that they will have an appropriate match for them.

Thank-you very much in advance

Are you sure you don't already have a roo? Those extra chicks could easily be Roosters added for warmth.

You could always just wait and try to pick up a free rooster next year, shouldn't be hard. The big advantage of that, I'd think, would be that you'd be able to pick one with a good temperament.

If I get straight-run chicks next year I will probably have a roo or three to spare...

Well, I'm pretty sure there all girlies. They are all maturing the same. I did specify only pullets in my order. I think they just added a few extras just in case some died. But you never know!

I may take you up on that offer! :c)

Thanks ladies...

To my knowledge, all my birds are "supposed" to be sexable. But yes only 90% accurate. Like i had mentioned before, Im new to the chicken world and don't know a whole lot about them. I just figured I would add my "Wanted birds " so they can all grow at the same time as opposed to starting them all over again in the spring.

Thank-you SilkieChicken for letting me know that a Rooster can be added later on without much fuss.

And thanks Rooster-red for your RIR suggestion!

Cheers,
Megan

I personally love my light brahma, he's very sweet natured, which is supposed to be a breed trait, (even though he had a rough cockerelhood dealing with humans, he's a rescue) and though his body is white, he has these gorgeous black with irridescence tail feathers, and white and black collar.

He's VERY handsome and stately (he's also huge, so he's got that "I am king of the flock" thing going on which is very cute..
