Is it better to make your own nesting boxes?

"Better" is all relative. As was mentioned above, if you worry about looks then DIY might not be for you.

Most times DIY items are built more "custom" than purchased items, so a DIY may better meet your needs.

I've seen many different items used for nestboxes from milk crates to dog houses. Mine were built External to the coop with a hinged roof. So I can collect eggs from them without even needing to open the coop(at least when they lay in the boxes, DOH!)

After reviewing what's available for purchase you will have to make the choice of which is better for you.

Sorry, I should have known better then to ask vague and subjective questions. I'm not far enough in the planning process to decide on nest boxes. I found a water with the nipples I will order, will worry about the heated aspect next fall... I do think I'm going to have him make me a feeder though! I like the one with the PVC elbow in the side of a bucket that prevents spills and hold a lot of feed.
