Sulmet as Preventative?

thought i would pop in and say hi. phone is giving me issues so i can't upload pics.

the house we have got is now raccoon and poop free. most of the grass is trimmed.

i lost a total of 8 chickens to the coons before we killed or relocated them all. a total of fourteen coons have been removed from the property. as well as possum and two coyotes.

out two cats had kittens, which we wanted so they could help with the masses of rodents. one had six kittens and ditched then. she is not a good mama kitty. the other had five and adopted the other cats six. we are helping bottle feed so no one misses a meal.

my DH and i will soon be going to school to drive trucks over the road. we will be leaving the house and critters in my sisters care. i am pretty sure she can handle it.

on another note, I'm late by almost a whole month. probably just stress, but we will be going to get a test done either next week or the one after. we hope its positive but won't be to heart broke if it isn't.

I've read to use 3 Tbsp/ gal of ACV. That's what I've been using. Doesn't seem to bother them. I do like the other thing about ACV. It keeps the water dishes from going sour. No more smelly chick bottles.

CV is an awesome food.....
Also consider Oil of Oregano for the chickens water. This product is a preventative for viruses, bacteria of all kinds and it is a anti-parasitic. My chickens got a cold this past winter. I had them on Baytril and other antibiotics. The only thing that completely cleaned this up was Oil of Oregano!!!!!!
There is no withdrawal at all. It is a food. And worms and bacterial hate this stuff. I read about it on this site. I researched it online and found that this is made in The Neverlands! An organic chicken farmer in PA uses this product for his meat chickens. My chickens love it. Use 6cc per gallon of water for stress and disease. Use 3cc for normal use to prevent any problems. My chickens have laid eggs all winter. They are healthy and happy. Which is why they lay so regularly. I am big on natural remedies. And Oil of Oregano will always be in my barn for my chickens. This company also has Oil of Oregano for horses. Which I have mine on as well. I hope this helps. Any time you give an animal antibiotics to prevent disease you diminish that animals ability to fight disease if they come down with something. I love this site too!!!!! And my and all chickens. Lol

I use apple cider vinegar with mother. Been using it for years. But I was told never use it in a metal water or container. Due to the reaction with the metal. That it poison your birds. True or not .I am not going to take a chance.
I also use it in other animals water as well. I noticed that went I do mosquitoes are not in the water. And went I don't they are there.

Here's my take on it:

Runny poops are normal, as long as they are not occurring 100% of the time. Cecal poops are often runny, and very stinky. Often look like chocolate pudding. Give those chicks some soil or sod from your yard. That will build their gut flora and give them gradual exposure to any cocci present. You want to do that BEFORE they move out into the yard and get hit with a big cocci load on their first rainy day.

Never give an antibiotic as a preventative.

ACV: If you use it, be sure to offer plain water also. Perhaps one waterer with, and one without.

I strongly suggest that you look into using fermented feed for the many nutritional advantages it provides.

I have never used medicated feed, and I've never had issue with coccidiosis in my birds. Some would suggest that my soil has a lower load of cocci. Possible? Who knows. I've had chickens on this property for 4 - 5 years now, and previous to that for 7 - 8 years as well. One thing that can help your yard to stay healthy is not allowing your run to turn into a barren moon scape: mud pit in the rain, dust bowl when it's not rainy. That can be accomplished with deep litter which will do a lot to keep your soil healthy. Again... lower load of pathogens highly likely with deep litter!

The couple I bought my chicks from said he also uses ACV with the mother and he said he just adds a little and never measures...idk which way to go because I heard about oil of oregano as well and read up some finding that it also is supposed to be really great for immune system and as antiviral.
Also does anyone know if there is a feed that is non GMO possibly organic but has animal protein? I don't believe chickens are naturally vegetarian and hate that the feeds I've found have soy as main source of protein. I'm very against soy based products for my family so I don't want that for my chicks either. Any thoughts and opinions?
