how's the hatching going everyone?

4 days to go. I was not able to do the weight check on day 14, so I just going to cross my fingers at this point and hope they had enough weight loss.

I just love the shape of a Sulmtaler egg don't you? Congrats! First eggs are so exciting.

Hatching is always a thrill...1 more week to go.

Sulmtaler chicks are the cutest!

Huh - so that funny shape is the breed, and not the strangeness of a new pullet egg? It is definitely distinctive.

Now, if I could just get her to lay them in the nest boxes. I have an old construction trailer which I rehabbed into the coop - current flock in the first half of the trailer. New chicks from spring in the second half. I thought the flocks would have integrated by now - the chicken door is at one end of the trailer, opening into the current flock's roosts and nests, and then opens into the second half, where the chicks, now pullets and roos, roost. No egg nests there, but...this sulmtaler laid in a corner up on a shelf.

I did salt the nest boxes with fake eggs....

I've never been able to get mine to lay in any nest box. Tried everything. They are not participating in any box idea I have. They prefer the middle of the outdoor pen or on the floor of the coop. And here is another unusual thing.... I moved, like load them up and drive 30 minutes kind if move.... Three days ago. They laid the day I moved, the day after, and they laid again today. They must not have participated in the poultry info meeting which said chickens don't lay for a while when they have been moved. So glad though!!!!!! Truly amazed.

that is amazing that they layed right through the move. maybe you'll see a delay in a few days....trying to remember the biology of egg laying and how long it takes the egg once it starts to finish.

Do your sulmtaler eggs have that funny shape and ridge? Not totally oblong and smooth? (pics posted earlier on this thread).

I guess I'll have to get a stool so I can see her nest - its way way up on an shelf.

LOL! Well, that explains why I keep finding eggs on the ground.

Most of mine use a floor nest box though.

Here is one of mine next to a "grocery store Large egg". They did have a ridge for a while when they first started laying. They still have that peculiar oblong pointy shape even though they have increased in size from small/medium to a large size since they started laying.

one of the sulmtalers is the first to start laying of nine pullets (3 or 4 different breeds), I'm waiting for everyone else. glad to find the eggs are a bit different so I can figure out who is or isn't laying. thanks for the pic.
