my sultan rooster's legs seem to look very red at the moment. we think he is molting because his feathers are everywhere at the moment, so i'm not sure if that's the reason and his legs always look red under all those feathers. also i wasn't sure if this could be leg mites? here are some pics;
Red on a hen or rooster's legs can be normal, a sign of being fertile, but your rooster looks to have raised scales that look like scaly leg mites. With feather-legged chickens it is hard to spot sometimes. Here is some info: http://ohioline.osu.edu/vme-fact/0019.html
Yes, it does look like scaly leg mites. Treat this by dipping his feet in mineral or vegetable oil every day or so for about a week. This will smother the mites. You can also try smothering them in petroleum jelly, or using a ready-made product such as Scaly Leg Protector (http://www.mannapro.com/products/poultry/scaly-leg-protector/)
