I had a couple bring me a barn that fell during the last storm and the main supports were tar treated utility poles, I've got them in the ground and starting my 40'x20' 13' high peafowl coop run around a fig tree. My question is do you think the tree is in danger from hot fertilizer aka poo? If so can I tarp around the trunk about 5' out to help?
I have never lost trees, shrubs, bamboo, roses, grape vines etc from having birds walking over the root systems (fertilizing). It sounds like your new flight is large enough, you shouldn't have a problem. If you have lots of birds in there and the birds kill the grass and trample the ground into mud you'll need to manure out, sow grass seed, and/or remove birds but none of that will hurt your fig tree. Not knowing how large your fig is, the only thing I can see being an issue is if the birds roost in the tree and break off branches and if that could be an issue be sure to mount roosting perches higher than the tree's hight (not necessarily directly above the tree) because the birds will roost at the highest point that they can. Tarping around the trunk will likely hurt the plant more by preventing its roots from accessing water. If a problem arises, putting up a 3 or 4 foot fence around the base of the tree would be a quick fix. Hope this helps,
