Sumatra Thread!

This is a blue.
They are blue, not blue based blacks. I know they are blue because when mated with that hen and other blue hens, we got splash chicks. We have the same rooster with the same hen and a few other blue hens and their first batch of eggs are due this weekend, I can almost guarantee we will get splash from that pen. The pullet has lightened up some, still not showable blue but more obviously blue than before. The birds we call platinum are from dun x blue, it is a unique color, different than khaki (which they are closer to than blue) and they have lacing. I'll try to get an updated picture of the (near black) pullet (now hen) to show her shade now.

Can you sex chicks by color? I have one developing white primary feathers already and is nearly a week old. Nice big feathers on it too.

you can with some breeds, just not with sumatras. Some have said though, that the whiter the black variety chick, the more green sheen they will have later. I have not put this to the test but also haven't really seen a difference either.

nice looking lacing on that bird! I'm looking for a blue andalusian roo are you in or near NC?
There is a breeder of Andalusians (really nice ones) in West Virginia. Go to blueandalusian.com and you will see them. I don't know if she has any adult birds available right now as she just shipped out 4 adults somewhere and has started hatching for the year.

I have a quick question... for any of you who have actually used an Andalusian in your breeding program, how long did it take to get your Sumatra "type" back? What about the influence of the single comb and large wattles on your Sumatras and the white ear lobe?

I'm considering a project. That's the reason I came over here in the first place.

Regarding that really dark blue, man! I thought some of mine were too dark and they don't even come close to being that dark. I wonder if its because the Sumatra is a black fowl in its natural state? Does all of that mean that the Sumatra has dominant black and the Andalusian was bred in (however long ago) to get lacing with its non-dominant black?

Hi how are all of you?
I'm looking forward to seeing what comes of my hatch, it's 3 days till my eggs start hatching. All my birds are well, but they aren't enjoying the rough wet weather we've had recently.

I'm quite pleased with a project I'm doing in wood work at school, we are making coat hangers, and we had to put a chamfer on the hanger, and we had to burn a image onto the piece. I burned on a picture of some one aiming a shot gun, and ducks flying above him. I'm quite pleased with my recent art work and woodworking projects at the moment.

Has anyone else hatched anything recently or has anyone anything due?
If so how are you getting on with hatching?

On the 11th me and my brother are going back to England for a week, it will be good to see everyone!

Giving that this could be a new development in blue genetics maybe you should contact Dr Sponnenburg and see if you can interest him in DNA testing just what is going on?
