Sumatra Thread!

Ouch migraines, I had one once at work it was hell. I might get some of that too, to have handy. I usually just suffer through headaches or make some tea of some sort that I think is calming.

I have sometimes wondered if migraines is mot some sort of sensory overload. Humans are very capable of smelling & hearing things better then we think. We are barraged by really nasty smells & constant sound in the urban setting.

I also heard not just any honey will work, that the commercial industrial honey is pretty much not as good medically.

Good to know it needs to be raw honey.....I would not have
thought about any differences. Natural remedies can be a
great thing to know and I would love to hear and discuss
some of these ideas. I admit I prefer natural remedies over
chemicals myself but I will research things as well.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Was reading up on mint since I have it growing around my house. It'll start getting used for more then just the kids homemade lemonade and the few times for cooking. I just read about making mint oil yourself and will do it later today. Will also start drying out some leaves for making tea. Thanks again FMP.

Does anyone know if the males are overly aggressive to each other like the old english breeds or jungle fowls? Because the males are freaking beautiful!!!! And i want like three of them but dont want to build to many cages!

I have had good luck with letting there be more then 1 rooster in the pen together, but not all roosters will allow this. I grow mine up together if possible, if not I try to add the rooster as a youngster to the older rooster's pen.

Good luck

Thanks!!
I have so many questions about them i dont know ware to start?
What kind of pen do they need?
Do the hens lay good?
Is this a good broody breed?
What kind of feed like is there a certain amount of protein?
Whats a good hatchery to get them from?

Like RF said, it all depends on the roosters.......some like company
and some don't. I find that the more area they have the less likely
they are to squabble among themselves. They are beautiful birds
and can be quite friendly too.

Thanks!!

I am sure lots of us can tell you different ideas on these questions.
Best thing to do is research first but what I do and know is I use the
same type of pen for all my birds including the Sumatras making sure
to give enough space for the number of birds. The hens are more of a
seasonal layer but some will lay all of the seasons. The hens lay a fair amount
of eggs but not as much as breeds that are bred as layers. Some hens will go
broody and some not so much.....again depends on the individual bird. I
feed mine the same as all my other chickens, good quality feed and I let
mine pick through kitchen scraps and I also give cooked eggs now and then. It
will cost as much to feed a hatchery bird as it will a good quality bird. Good birds
can be gotten from some hatcheries but ask if they have show lines they sell and
buy in late spring as that is when show folks may sell to the hatcheries. I would
just buy good birds locally or as far as you are willing to travel for one and
don't spend a lot on your first birds. Good sumatras can be bought here for
$10-$20 each and a dozen hatching eggs for $20. I prefer not to do shipped eggs
and I don't like to ship live birds.....just too many things can go wrong. If you
decide you want to show sumatras go to some shows and talk to the breeders.
Sometimes those very breeders will get you started with good breeders at a
fair price or even free. Do lots of research, research, research and don't
get in a hurry. Good luck and good to see you here.
