Sumatra Thread!

Finally sorted sumatras for breeding today! Looks like a total of 20 black hens and 5 dun hens. The dun rooster is with most of the black hens for now, might stick a young cockerel in with him to help 'service' that many ladies. The dun hens are all in with a black cockerel. For bantams, we have a dark dark dark blue cockerel with black/blue/dun hens. Eventually as the year goes by, most of the sumatra roosters will get a chance to add their genetics to our lines. Still unsure if the khaki bantam will be used but he is here for backup. Pics will be coming soon!

Sounds like you are going to have a good year.
Do have any problems with the roos when you add in a new one like that?
How big are your breeding pens?

I've never had a issue with pen swapping males and aggression toward the new added male. You'll get the normal rooster fight for a bit, but once mine figure out who's boss that's about it. I'm sure like any you have some with a bad personality. and they were originally bred as a fighting rooster, but I have those too, and these today are nothing like that, thank God....

We normally have some sparring and they'll chase eachother for a bit. The hens were more mean than the roosters this time. The pen that I have the 22 birds in has a covered part that is 4x8 and the yard is 16 x 16

I have 16 cockerels together and they love one another. the most funny thing is that they think I am a hen so when I walk around or call all their names they will follow me. You know when a rooster dose the clucking thing to get the to the hens to come over. they will do that to me when I come around their cage.

it is so funny that my sister laughs her eyes out.

Good to know most of you don't have much fighting between the roos.
I have not tried to add a new roo to a breeding group yet but it's
good to know it is possible. It does sound like a large pen is helpful
when adding more to the group. Thanks, I am considering adding
some sumatras in the future as I may have a chance to get some
nice stock from a known breeder if my DD will let me get some of
her hatching.

I have 2 Sumatra Roosters and 1 hen they are all about 20 months old. My son (who is 8) recently told me that he wants to do chicken shows. He heard us talking about the different traits of the birds and wanted to why it matters. I told him because some people take their chickens to shows to win prizes and now that is what he wants to do. So I was wondering if ours are even close to show quality.

This Rooster has a darker face

They all have the yellow bottom feet, and the Rooster both have multi spurs.

Sorry if the pictures are not the best it is very cloudy outside today.
