Sumatra Thread!

Fmp, you wouldn't know of any Irish Sumatra breeders would you?
i would love to get some more Sumatra hens.
Yesterday i put my older Sumatra cockerel in my electric wire with his bantam and a fowl size hen, and i think he is a great cockerel as i found what would seem to be a fowl size Sumatra egg. so I'm very happy, this means in a week or two i could hatch some eggs.
I was so annoyed on the 28Th of February when my Sumatra hen went broody, she was due to have chicks on the 2ND of march. so i went out to feed the hen on the 28Th of February and the dogs had killed the hen. i was so annoyed, the term "so close but yet so far" comes to mind.

Who else has had incidents like this?

My only non human predator attack was years ago on a broody silkie, she too was close to hatch when something dug in the pen and tried to take her body (body didn't fit threw the hole). This happened at night and it was vary early spring, so nights were still cold and by the time I found the eggs, they were stone cold. Most of my egg loss is do to the silkies fighting over the eggs

but them silkies are pretty good at carrying eggs

Yeah when our dogs killed the hen she was still warm, I probably could have hatched the eggs but I thought it would be nicer to burry her with her eggs.

What do you think killed your hen?

You are the only person in the greater UK that I know with sumatras. I don't think we have ever lost a sumatra to predators, even when they're out free ranging. I have lost some sumatra chicks to dogs/cats/hawks but once they're juveniles, they seem to be great.

Since it dug a small whole under wood, and couldn't get her body back threw the whole, it was probably a small coon or opossum after her eggs, but took her instead. Never could understand why the animal didn't come back after I fixed the whole but I count myself lucky that she has been my only non human predator loss, besides for a few chicks to a snake last year

(which I caught and relocated)

I didnt like the ferret who killed my hen, he kept coming back to try get the body.

whats the biggest threat to your chicken in america?

fmp when do you have chicks for sale?
I will ask my mum if we could think about getting some, if you think its fair for them to be shipped over to Ireland.I would like to build up a decent sized flock.

ill post some pics over the weekend of my birds. im very impressed with my cockerel who got my hen laying.

I got bored so i went and got some photos.

The new fowl size hen

I think the fowl size hen is feeling the cold.

This is the cockerel who got the hen to lay

Its a bit windy.

Because iv'e only had bantam Sumatra hens around, the wing span on the fowl size hen amazes me.

stonykill I don't think you should leave. I am sorry if I have done anything to upset you. yes I understand what it is like to be a out cast I am one at my shcool.I know you are having troubles with some of us who show but no one should have to leave because they are getting bullied out of this thread. that to me is wrong! I don't know if a wild sumatra was blue or not but it sounds like it could be possible. sorry but this is not high school.

I don't have troubles with any one who breeds. I take issue with being told what happens with MY flock is impossible. When I see it time and time again. Yes it isn't high school. Although many of the responses by "educators" were very high schoolish
i started a HUGE argument on a thread a few months back that was began because of breeding and cross breeding! it got violent between breeders! honestly I think its fine to have your own views of a breed... but please shut yer faces when someone is explaining their OWN flock! it is not your flock you have no idea what has been worked into or out of someone elses flock! THANK YOU ALL "BYC EDUCATORS"!!! I HAVE NOT WANTED TO RIP INTO SOMEONE IN A WHILE! thank you for bringing out the inner NCO! and for ruining this thread for me! please refrain from doing so again please!
any issues with what I have said report me to admin!
You the man
Talking about breeds always ends up in an argument.
it should not.

I have read where the Sumatra were in different color (red breasted black) in the wild. But haven't found old pictures of a wild Sumatra, Stonykill (hoping you come peek at what is said) Do you have any idea what the wild type Sumatra looked like to breed towards that?? I would love to see some pictures if you have any.
the books I am refering to were written well before color photagraphy was invented. So I can only go by what they write, not what they looked like by pictures
I hope stony comes back I agree with her views about people changing Sumatras.
I pee standing up. I'm a rooster not a hen

Hi all, I'm new to sumatras and have been reading this thread to try to get as much information about the breed. Lately all I've been seeing is bickering. Wasn't this thread originally started to DISCUSS the breed, not argue about your way versus another? Personally I like hearing people's own perceptions of the breed and how their flocks differ from others. There's no need to argue or call other people names just because they have a different opinion or their flock differs from yours.

Just the opinion of a newbie trying to learn.
Every time I put my opinion or my results from my flock out in this thread I'm told I'm wrong, argued with etc. It seems the show people and the byc "educators" are a little narrow minded. Sorry if it offends, but that is exactly how it seems.

There's at least one thing we can agree on, sort of. I think people with a different point of view than mine are idiots also.
That said, the fact that you found something that doesn't make sens written in an old book doesn't make it true. black x black doesn't produce 20% blue offspring. Not in Blue Andalusians & not in Blue Sumatras. Blue genetics are pretty well understood at this point.
I'll walk outto my breeding pen with a black rooster and 3 black hens and tell them to STOP doing the impossible and hatching blue chicks. I don'tthink it will make a difference, but I'll be happy to relay the message that what they are doing is IMPOSSIBLE.
Many things are pretty well understood. Until they aren't. Pluto is a planet. Pluto isn't a planet. It was once a documented fact that the world was flat. It was once thought cloning was impossible. Growing up in the 70's all of the scientific "experts" beleived we were headed towards an ice age. Now those same "experts" think we are warming too rabidly. Todays well understood fact is tommorows fiction.
None of us are over 150 years old. None of us saw an actual wild Sumatra. These writings are the only clues we have as to what they originally were.
