Sumatra Thread!

I had at one time thought of crossing my black sumatra rooster (only sumatra I had at the time) to my two golden lakenvelder hens (didn't have a rooster for them

). It still crosses every now and than...black head and neck, white body, black saddles and tail (using a silver lakenvelder) or black head and neck, golden body, black saddles and tail (using a golden lakenvelder). Maybe one day..

..... once I get to where I want to be with my other projects that is

.
Those would be pretty cool looking.. did you know you can cross a golden lakenvelder male with your silver hens and get sex linked lakenvelders? the hens would be gold and the males would be silver :D

As far as colors go, we just have the black/dun LF and working on making some blues. For bantams we have black/blue and working on dun. From the bantam dun project, we have lots of platinum and it looks like there might be a khaki out there too.
I still think it would be cool to see a red sumatra. Maybe not RIR dark but more like a rust color like the red orpingtons. I think combined with the black face/legs and big black eyes it would be eye catching. To make it easier though, you'd have to make wheaton and go that route...

At the moment I only have 2 youngsters, a blue that needs better lacing
and one that I'm debating on whether it is blue or blue splash.
Does anyone know why only the black and blue LF is accepted
for showing??? Why not splash if blue is accepted?

I am not quite sure, maybe one thing, in Sumatras in the dark face and with splash's it gets lightened up and more red...?

yes, I agree the face coloring gets rather pale or red but if blue bred to blue
creates blue, black or splash and the blue is accepted then it would make sense
for the splash to be accepted......just something I find odd puzzling and I was
hoping to find out why they aren't accepted or would be sometime in the near
future. That would give hope for other colors to be accepted as well????

I have actually done this, trying to get some genetic diversity into them, as there is not much there. I ended up with only one and she is a very light golden compared to the pure goldens, but out of the youngsters this year, she has the blackest head/neck for the hens. Thanks for letting me know that this cross of colors would be sex linked as I didn't know that. Might go switch my roosters around and give it another go, as I don't think if anybody does want hatching eggs next year, that they would be apposed to sex linked chicks in lakenvelders.

yep we have blr wyandottes that we do a sex link in, just for layers for people, you can sell them as day old pullets and we are fortunate enough that we have a person that buys ALL of our cockerels from all of our breeds of birds. Its really great!

I think what decides it is popularity in the showing world.. Don't quote me on this because I am sure, but I think that there has to be quite a few being shown, then so many have to be shown by a certain number of exhibitors at a certain show or a big show... I am not sure exactly, but I know it takes a few years, as well as backing and promoting. Gues that didn't help much LOL.. good question for NYREDS I would think

Blues were just recently accepted, I mean in the scheme of things (2002), blue bantams were accepted before the large fowl (1996)

It is interesting that the blues were accepted without accepting the splash
that is a product of breeding blues to blues. If I remember it right when I had
asked at a show I was at last year, asked a member of the polish breeders club
about a new color in the polish and he said it took a certain number of breeders
breeding the color for a certain number of years and a certain number of birds and
getting consistent results and then they could be shown under all other variety. Don't
know how true or if it applies to sumatras..........just sharing what was told to me.
