Sumatra Thread!

As long as nobody is fighting I guess I am back in. About the splash sumatras I show the splash even if they are not in the standard yet. I am trying to get other people to show the splash so that they do become a recognized color. That would make my day!

I would also love to see Blue wheaten sumatra's. have you guys ever seen one?

APA and ABA are different. APA is a minimum of 5 people breeding for 5 years, a qualifying meet where 50 or more must be present and pass inspection. A standard must be drafted and approved before the qualifying meet. There is a application fee, and some minimums of birds that need to be exhibited in that time that I can't recall right now.

It does seem odd that Splash would not be recognized when the breed comes in Blue (indeed Black should be automatic in my opinion as well with Blue as well but is not in the case of the Andalusian and Plymouth Rock Large Fowl). The only breed that APA actually recognizes in Splash is the Silkie.

Andalusians have been in the Standard since 1874 & breeders have always considered Splash & Black birds as by-products.

Understand that, I guess all the other breeds in blue variety just went by that precedent then?

I guess I could see the splash being so unpredictable could be hard to come up with a good standard, and the only breed I can think of that comes in Blue but not Black other than the aforementioned and explained Andalusian is the Plymouth Rock large fowl, and lets face it, when was the last time anyone saw one of those in blue that was any good?

At least with the Sumatra they have both black and blue in.

if the show breeders consider them as by-products, do they usual cull them or
are they still used in the breeding program to continue the genetics they have?

sorry....seems Ramirez had the same thoughts as me but types faster

The APA also recognizes splash moderns, the only reason the splash Sumatra is not recognized is because no one organized an effort to get them in the Standard.

Walt
interesting to know........would this apply to the dun sumatras as well?
could they earn recognition if enough breeders worked for it?

Can't hardly wait until sumatras are on CSU.

Does splash lack of pigment on the face , how about legs ? Cos if they do it will be hard for them to compete against darker colors in shows.
