Sumatra Thread!

oh God, at least a thousand breeders, and about that many still growing out that I have culled down to at this point in the year, but still have 8 bators going too.

on the lakenvelders, only way to fix that is just by selection and heavy breedings. Pick and cull hard for the darkest solid heads on the hens, as well as the males. pick and choose the best off those and continue to repeat the process. An import would be a great thing to do too if you found someone who had some from the European lines. They have centuries of work into their birds, so often they look a lot different that USA stock. It's all in the genetics of the birds though, so the only way to fix something like that is strict selective breeding for those traits.
I would totally mess up the bird, but a black crested white polish may help blacken up the head too, of course that'd open a new can of worms to fix then though
And my DH thought I had a few birds

. I have messed with some polish projects and the crest wouldn't be too hard to get rid of, now the v comb might be a little different. I haven't been able to find any from overseas, do you know of anybody that has some? I have been thinking of crossing the lakenvelders to a black andalusian and breeding back. What do you think of this idea? Shape, size, comb, ear lobe color, leg and foot color, and egg color are all the same between the two breeds.

yep, that might not be a bad idea. The black would only help reinforce the areas that should be black any way.

The black crested polish are hard to find too, I use to have them, but that was several years back. the andalusians wouldn't be a bad idea I don't think. I mainly know long tail and d'anver folks overseas, but if you're willing to go threw the extreme process of importing, I can certainly find you some from over there. I'm sure my buddies there know of some one who has nice ones

I would die to have some of Henk69's birds, but unfortunaly I don't have that kind of extra money right now with 3 kids. But I do happen to have a black crested white polish hen in one of my polish pens :) . Might have to try both her and the black andies and see what happens.

Haha yep I've seen em. There's true brown reds there. Then just a black with a lot of red leakage. Think they are calling black red but bits not a true color. Just a black that has either brown red or bb red in it. The red just leaks threw the hackle area. But the others are true brown red birchens. All the hens shown are brown reds.

Even though this is the Sumatra thread, I always enjoy helping others out. About the lakenvelder x polish. Normally on the first generation cross of a single x V comb, you get 'antlers' since both single and V are recessive. Cross the best marked birds back to lakenvelders to get single combs. In that cross, you should also have some non-crested birds to choose from. I know elsewhere they have color that is called moorkop in the Dutch owlbeards. If you take away the crest, that is what many of the black crested white polish (that I've seen) would look like as far as markings go.

The wildfarbig hens looked like the same color I have seen on the Old Enlgish Pheasant Fowl hens where it is an overly melanized BBR/wildtype with some lacing. Which reminds me Aubrey, what are your thoughts on the 'grouse tailed' phoenix pullet I posted a pic of on facebook? (again, not sumatra, lol)

As I was out staring at chickens, I noticed that a couple of the older dun bantam project birds look pretty decent. They are pullets which is nice because it is easier to keep colored pullets with a black rooster for us anyway
