Sumatra Thread!

This is why I like duns over blues, their color is pretty predictable. With blues, you get the super dark birds, then you get the 'powder puff/powder blue' birds. They all breed like blues, just different shades. When McKinney & Govero were still around, we got some blue ameraucanas from him. We had a couple average birds and a couple that looked nearly black but were blue, none of them had lacing and it seems that the ameraucana breeders still haven't been able to get any lacing on their blues.

Have you tried crossing your really dark ones with your powder blues?

I have been finding that it is a balancing act of sorts to get good lacing. Once I'm there, that may change but for now, I have to use birds on one side to make up for differences on the other side.

A blue late hatched pullet maturing very nicely. I am not selecting for the 15 degree Sumatra tail. I have other things in mind for her. She does have 2 sisters with good Sumatra tails and one with a tail at horizontal like herself.

Probably due to the birds not carrying Pg, which is not linked to Bl, which is why not all breeds in Blue have lacing (despite the Standard saying they should, I don't think they understood the genetics when that was written). I don't know how Blue Ameraucana's were developed but unless they were made with Andalusians (or had Pg introduced by another source) they will never have true lacing. Most of your Blue varieties did stem from Andalusians, but the Asiatics (Cochin and Langshan are the only applicable ones really) did NOT, and thus do not have the pattern gene required for lacing, breeds derived from them likely do not either, which is why most of the Jersey Giants and Orpingtons you see in Blue do not have true lacing. Other breeds may have lost it in some lines but not in others. This may be one reason why super old timers (and those taught by them) would say to only use a Black that came from Blues if you were going to use a Black bird, because there is no way to tell if they have the pattern gene or not, same with most splashes really, and you'll find that many of the old timers only bred Blue to Blue to get the best lacing (because the best laced birds would likely carry Pg, even if this wasn't understood then, the result is the same, they just didn't know why)

Edit: I'm not sure why some of my text changed color...weird.

He is pretty Troyer. Are you going to work on platinum?
Well I got him to see if I can breed him to my Cubalayas and get platinum in them. Not sure yet if I'll try to get them in Sumatras. It is an interesting thought though.
