Sumatra Thread!

That's an AWESOME looking Sumatra! That's great you got some from Tom. I was able to meet him, very nice guy with tons of info. I bought a blk Sumatra roo from him, he said it was his core breeder for his LF show winners:) He had so many bantam Sumatras that were the best I've ever seen! Fun show, lots of Sumatras from him and I saw some from I think Tim Nagle? that looked very nice also. I'm not sure who's won the champ AOSB but here's a pic

And this is my new guy. Tom said he picked this one out of a lot(maybe 100) because of the feather quality-very thick strong tail feathers, his head size and shape and his yellow feet. He's pretty docile too. He has 2 one inch spurs on each leg.

He is really nice looking. The two Blue Roosters that won Champion and Reserve Champion AOSB were Tom's. He also sold two amazing blue hens to Bill Wulff if you saw them. And the blue bantam u have a photo of is the bird tom sold to me. He won RV out of the 8 blue bantams but it was under tom's name. We also bought the pair of S C white Leghorn LF that were in the silent auction!

Quote: Wow I really like this male! He has with out a doubt a good head. It's full and really round. A lot of sumatras Iv see don't have full heads. Some people don't realize how important it is to have fullness until you are up against sumatra's that have it. I am really glad you took Toms advice. And I hope you smoke all the other sumatras at shows with this nice bird.

Thanks! I'm gonna just use him as a breeder though get some good chicks from him. He has a shorter tail, Tom said it was picked out when he was young and it never fully grew:( but the saddle feather and the shorter thicker sickles really have such width it's awesome. We'll see in the fall what kind of birds I get from him.

And thank you Ramirez, I'm gonna hopefully hatch about 20-30 and cull in the fall. I don't have tons of coop space to grow out:(

Sounds like a good plan. I'm working on breeders myself for my kids to hopefully get some decent birds to try showing, since I don't believe in showing a bird someone else did the work on. So far it's going pretty well. Hope it goes well for you also.

Quote: I think it is wrong when people steal the credit from the breeder and claim the bird as their own creation. I don't think it is a crime to credit the breeder when you show it. Some 4-hers don't start out breeding. They seem to take is slow, which is smart if you think about it. First off they figure out how to show a chicken, then they focus on what the judge is looking for in a sumatra. Once they have got it down like eating pie they start breeding.

I agree when I win with a bird I bought I do credit the breeder or if I win with a bird from only one line I will credit the winning line. I feel it is only fair to let the credit be spread, but I also feel it is half the credit of the owner who has fed, cleaned and cares for the bird to make sure it looks the way the breeder intended. All in all the type of the bird and relation to the SOP should be credited to the breeder and the condition of the bird should be credited to the exhibitor.
