Sumatra Thread!

Went to a small show today, got reserve AOSB with this hen. The judge really liked her but she wasn't in the best condition because she was in the breeding pen. Also saw some of BGMatts birds t

Congratulations on your win. I love that green sheen on her.

Please don't think you aren't valued.
I to am a learner. I won't consider myself an accomplished breeder until I have learned how to take advice from those that have traveled the 'breeders road' ahead of me. What I mean by that, is that I really don't know a whole lot until I have proven that I can take advice that is given to me, put it to practice, get good results for myself, help others get started, see them be successful at shows and become accomplished breeders themselves. And, guess what, by that time I will probably have learned that I didn't know as much as I thought I did and won't even think of myself as an accomplished breeder, but rather as one that is willing to help others get started and to see them prosper without getting a lot of honor along with it.
Don't get me wrong, I still have a lot of what I think are excellent ideas, but hopefully I'm learning (at least in part) that those with a LOT of experience are worth listening to, without adding our own proud ideas and considering the really experienced ones as Old School and out of date. So to those of you that have a LOT of breeding experience, please don't be put off/frustrated by the ones of us that really want to learn even if we make stupid or inconsiderate comments.
As fortyfivefarm stated, it's very clear to those of us that really want to learn, who the breeders are that actually have the valuable advice that many of us long for.
As an example; fowlman01 has more years of experience than my age. To me that means I need to take note of what he shares, it is very valuable information/advice. Even if I was a Master breeder and a Master in showing, I would still do well to take note and listen carefully when another highly experienced breeder shares his valuable knowledge. I could easily pick up valuable breeding information/tips that could have easily slipped my mind or I might never have thought about, whatever it might be.
Again, to those of you that have traveled the 'breeders road' ahead of us, don't get frustrated too overly much, there are still those of us the really want your wealth of breeding/showing knowledge and advice.
I am not a major Sumatra breeder (I am mainly a Cubalaya breeder), but I still value advice that I glean from this thread and apply it to my Cubalaya breeding efforts. I am working hard to get top of the line show quality fowl and value the serious breeding advice and efforts of all.

Quote: Quote: You guys are not worth my time them. I have lots of good information to share I know in the long run what I have said is not going to burn people or turn people in the wrong direction. I am sorry but I really don't trust people on the internet. I know why most of the best sumatra breeders are not on here. Poppycock they would get burned and told they where wrong I totally see why now. I am lucky to have spent every friday with one of the poultry judges who really knows his stuff. I still have a whole lot to learn but I would rather get that information from people who truly know what they are doing v.s people who act like they do. The more you degrade me the more you will hear arrogance out of my mouth. You would do it to if you knew what you where saying was not wrong.

I believe you meant 100 years combined experience. Doesn't matter we still don't know anything. That's one of the reasons I don't post much now. You can't help people that know it all.

Walt

I was going to ask if that 10 year claim was a typo. I knew it had to be a lot more than that.

I'm with the others. You guys know what you're talking about and have the birds to prove it.

I'm not a copycat. I stand on my own two feet. Walt has been breeding and showing birds for longer than I've even been alive, I think. I've lived long enough to know to respect my elders and also, the proof is in the pudding (so to speak) and I've seen his birds. I wouldn't dispute anything he says without a lot of research and I mean a LOT! Plus, I'd have to consider his advice and apply it to my flock where I can and even then, if something doesn't work for me, doesn't mean he's wrong. I've not seen NYREDS birds but he's also been in this for quite a number of years.

Quote: As some have stated above, I really do appreciate yours and NYreds knowledge and am very grateful that you both took the time to answer my question. It gives me the right spot to start working on a rarer breed that has driven me crazy for a few years. It will also allow me to teach the right way to my kids. My son is still beaming from ear to ear and is pure giddy about the breed he has chosen to start showing, and it's not due to the lack of competition that he will face in the ring for his breed, it's due to the answer you gentlemen provided about how to properly breed them. It seems my craziness for this breed has grown onto him as well and he wants to help improve this breed, which is very sorely needed. Which makes me want to do it all the more, so that maybe by the time he is a young man, he won't be the only one showing this breed and can help others get started with them the right way.

So please do continue to put up with us, as I feel most do look forward to your post and answers to questions. Thank you again for your time and help.

Walt
I enjoy seeing your post and helpful opinions. I have spoken to you in the past on your options if my birds and breeding ideas since I truly value your expert opinions. I truly enjoy showing and breeding poultry and hope to stick with it for many years since I am so young, so I feel it is only right to listen to everyone and not burn bridges that don't need to be burned. Please do not hide your information or feel that you are going to be contradicted because many of us like stated before look forward to reading what you and NYREDS write and feel all information is important to share even if some May or may not take the advice some of us will, and the most important thing is not disagreeing with each other but as a group trying to better and maintain the quality the Sumatra breed and poultry.

If you knew me you would say I am very respectful. I am not respectful to those who undermine my breeding skills and doubt me as a breeder. My show record and the quality of my birds speak for themselves. I think I am doing well for my age. Starting from scratch with no help from my parents, studying the standard for 9 years up and down and getting a some clarification from really well known breeders and asking them what they all thought about my birds... I was not disagreeing with fowlman01 or Nyerds I was saying why I don't like inbreeding and why I don't mind adding in new blood. I am not going to be dishonest to you.

Are Sumatras more drama-inducing than other breeds? I joined for the pics (getting me a yard-candy hatchery Sumatra next month) like I did for my other eye candy breeds...and this thread always seems more dramatic than most. More pics and less fighting please!
