Sumatra Thread!

I suspect that because those sites often say sumatras lay an average of 100 eggs per year someone decided that since there are 100 weeks in a year it would make sense that one egg is laid per week.

There are 100 weeks in a year where you live? Here on Earth there are only 52 weeks in a year.

Sorry NYREDS, a little sarcasm about the fuzzy math some people come up with to explain the simple things they know nothing about.

Babies are exactly one month. Still waiting to determine gender. One appears a little more aggressive with the other roos in the batch but I never trust that. I have had some sassy ladies in the past.

I have a couple young ones also. Has anyone seen white laced saddle feathers like this? I'm assuming it will lose them but I'm also wondering if I hatched an egg from a different hen than expected as I have a couple laying hens in my flock.

Hey dsfrango, good to see you! It looks like a different hen sneaked an egg into your hatch. Not only will this little roo not lose the colour in those saddle hackle but his neck will likely grow similar looking hackle. I haven't seen mixes in my sumatras like this, but I have seen mixes like this in other breeds.

I'm with St3ph3n on this Dsfrango, Your young rooster will only get more colorful, besides for some in the hackle, he might even get some on his wing bows. It would be interesting to see how he turns out, if you keep him that long.

Puddin Fluff, I would wait till it's about 3 months and then re-post some pictures.

Hope all is well with everyone.

Oh boy haha, well I'm gonna sell him anyways. Its either 1/2 Easter Egger or Barred Rock. They're in with my breeding Sumatras for the different colored eggs. At this point I don't remember which hatched and which didn't. Once they all hatch it's a pile of shell and fluff!

Quote: Thanks. I keep staring at their faces and looking for any signs of comb and checking neck feathers for points but so far none. It is interesting to me how some breeds develop earlier than others. My daughter swears that our banty cochin was trying to crow the other day and he is the same age but very obviously a roo, bright comb and wattles. I think that is why I like the mixed flock: comparing and contrasting.

My chicks are doing well, and the foals are also very energetic. I have 20 eggs which have chicks in them and they're due on Saturday.

I did well at the Sussex County Poultry Show this past weekend. I was also able to clerk with Tom Roebuck and learn a lot. The judges were great. My Sumatras showed okay but we're beat out by Tom Kernan which doesn't matter because my line comes from him. He won champion and reserve champion AOSB on two black Sumatras, one hen and one cock, Jan Brett won Champion and Reserve AOCCL on w/c polish bantams. My Shamo hen beat out my Sumatras and other Junior birds for Champion Junior AOSB. Here is a photo of my wins. I was honored to do so well and I am looking toward to my crazy show weekend next weekend. I have a poultry show next Saturday the 31st and an ARBA double show the next day!
