Sumatra Thread!

It looks like a black sumatra for sure Nickeechickee. This chick in the photo is one that I hatched out. she looks mostly blue but her feathers came out black with a really nice green sheen to them. I am happy you got such a cute chick.

Well, I have decicecided that Sumatras are pretty smart. We put our babies out in the grow out pen this weekend. The sumatras were first to find their "bed" the first night and we had rain yesterday and the Sumatras were the only dry ones because they went to bed".

Hello!

My daughter has a trio of Black Sumatra's that she purchased to raise as a 4-H Project. They were purchased from a breeder and are high quality birds. I've fallen in love with the birds they're sweethearts!

I do a significant amount of hatching my own birds. We have so far had zero luck getting any Sumatra eggs to hatch. We have been trying for over a year. I broke down and ordered 6 straight run chicks from Sand Hill Preservation in hopes to get a few more girls.

I would appreciate any help and advice.

Welcome and good luck with the new chicks and your daughters pair.

Had a mouse that the snake missed show up in the feed bin (left the lid off again

), so I scooped the mouse up in a can and threw it to my main sumatra pen. I figured they would be like the rest of my pens of other breeds and just chase each other and steal it from each other. Boy was I wrong! They did chase each other, but they also flogged each other and got into flat out fights over this mouse. Guess next time I'll put it in a different pen when there is only one mouse.

Have a great day.

I am not an expert at hatching but have done a few. Have you checked any of the eggs to see if they are fertile? I would start there if you haven't. Your roo may not be getting his job done.
