Sumatra Thread!

Ok so opinions and info needed please....

My son wants to have chickens with long tails like Sumatras, however he wants WHITE feathers. I've seen white Sumatra Bantams, but I really prefer LF. I,ve never seen a LF white Sumatra.

Do they exist?
If not, I have some white bantam wyandottes, white orpingtons and white Plymouth rocks. I suppose I could cross any of them and see what happens....

Thoughts?

P.s. I really don't want to get another breed to try this.

LF white sumatras are not a recognized variety, and I do not know a breeder off hand that is working on them. I know you said no more breeds but a LF white yokohoma is pretty close in looks to a sumatra.

As for crossing the birds you got, well you can do it. It will ruin the sumatra type and features. It would take a very long time going that route. If it is for fun, then have at it.

There are white Sumatras around, but the breeders I know of that have them don't want their name given out. These are people that I knew before they had the white Sumatras. Several that tried the whites just didn't have good success with them and eventually got rid of them or killed them. What I mean by not successful is that they bred them for several years and were unable to improve them at all, and instead of selling them to someone that would continue breeding them, but not to the standard, they preferred to stew them. I think it would potentially have been possible to breed them up, but they would have needed excellent stock from other breeders as well.

Just my thoughts but if it was me I would go with white Phoenix or the white yokohoma
and if you still wanted to cross either of those two breeds to sumatras they would be closer
in type than the orpingtons or others you suggested.

There are white Phoenix with long tails. Of course that is another breed to add. Here is a video of Cackle Hatchery's Bantam White Phoenix.

Phoenix have single combs though and I really like the pea combs on the sumatras. That and I simply do NOT have room for another breed.

Splash would be a possibility, but I'm having terrible luck locating a blue breeder on this side of the Mississippi. The shipping is just atrocious to try and go cross country. If anyone knows of any I'm all ears!

I'm thinking I might play around with using the White Bantam Wyandottes simply b/c they have the pea combs also. It would be a 'for fun' hatching just to see what comes out of it. I probably won't even try this till August simply because my daughter wants to take at least 1 of the white bantams to the fair. I do understand it would be a long process though. Course I have to get proof that Blackberry is even fertilizing eggs - which is hard to do since nothing has hatched out of a Sumatra egg yet. This may have to wait till I can get another Roo....

Kinmera, wyandottes have rose combs, not pea combs. They are small but totally different structure than a pea comb.

Bah, I thought about that about 5 minutes after I posted that I had screwed up the comb names. I REALLY need to slow down when I am typing.

Picture time! This is an updated photo of one of my now 5 month old pullets.


Like I said earlier my spring blues were a wash. You can see what I mean. Here is one of the blues. She is about 4.5 months, and still missing half her tail as most of my babies right now.



This one I will keep for a male only breeding line.



I believe he is almost 4.5 months old. I pulled what little tail feathers he had because they got ruined during the move. He should be interesting to see once they grow back.

Absolutely do not worry about it I cannot tell you how many times I have done that.
