Not sure how great this pic is. I'm curious as to what you all think of my DD Sumatra Roo. I think he's close to type, but I'm still learning

Once again I agree with ramirezframing, a better picture would be nice and even do him better justice (the photo makes him look to be standing awkward). However, just looking at this picture and not putting my hands on him, you can tell he is good breeder quality. He does have a slight break in the topline, but that could be the condition he is in. Looks to have a nice mulberry face and comb. He also looks to be nice and broad. Pairing him with a hen that has nice thick feathers would compliment him well. I would watch the offspring for the comb, he does have a curve in it. Although, that being said it is the right size. I say you should be happy with this bird.

Does anyone have some good photos of black Sumatra chicks? I need to figure out which 9 of 30 are the sumatras and which are the blue/black orpingtons.

The black and white one is a black Sumatra, less than a week old. If you notice the legs, they are black on top, yellow on the foot. They turn black all over except the bottom of the foot as they develop.

Perfect pictures! From the looks of it you are right, I think you have a pair. Second one is definitely a pullet.

Thanks. I hope I am able to keep the roo. We run a mixed flock and I do not plan on breeding for hatching but I would love the eye candy that is the Sumatra roo. We have an adorable little frizzle cochin roo so as long as the two work out some boundaries we'll keep both. Unfortunately the pullet will just be a pet as she has a slight cross beak. It isn't a hindrance to her eating, but cuts her out of any breeding program anyway. I have to say I am in love with their personalities. My hubby isn't too enthusiastic about all my chickens. If he didn't complain so much I would have more pens and do some breeding. As it is, we just enjoy them for the eggs, a little 4H showing, and entertainment.

Thanks for the input and I really enjoy looking at everyone's birds. I will post on occasion but I do more stalking.

I have one setting on 3 turkey eggs right now. If she is covering all the eggs, I'd leave her to her job.
