Sumatra Thread!

I have searching, but don't have the time to read all the pages in this thread. I have blacks and the splashes in my post a few up on this page (I think they are blue splash ). Currently, I have my blue splash rooster with the black hens, what can I expect if I hatch out chick's ? How about if I put my splash hen with one of my black roosters?

Black + Splash = Blue

Do some people refer to dun as platinum or vice versa? I have been trying to figure out dun?

Platinum is a bird with one copy of blue and one copy of dun. Jeremy has photos of his rooster that is a platinum. I used to think it was another term for khaki (homozygous dun).

Dun is referred to as chocolate sometimes - usually depends on the breed.

the balck one is already a year old, the black and white is 7 months now

Did you use some shamo or other oriental game to get the legs on your sumatras that long? I am going to breed mine to look like yours. I don't like the short legs on most of the show stock you see these days. I like the look of the german lines much better. I hatched off some bantam sumatras and I am going to cross them to some black and blue bantam modern games to get the legs longer. I have a pair of black LF sumatras. I am going to try and find some black shamo to croos into them to get the long legs back. If I can't find them I will use my modern x sumatra bantams and cross them to my LF and work up from there.

Barring like barred rocks, dominiques, cuckoo marans, cochins, etc. is sexlinked barring. When you mate a barred cock to most hens, you get all barred offspring since barring is generally dominant. When you mate a hen that is barred like the breeds I mentioned, all the sons come out barred and females black. We use barred hens in our sexlink pen to get barred cockerels and solid hens. We used the barred rock cock on some hens and got all barred offspring as expected.
